Born in the streets of Recife between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, frevo combines music, dance, carnival, crowds, and bodily virtuosity in an immediately recognizable language: fast-paced brass sections, almost acrobatic steps, and colorful small umbrellas that have become icons of Pernambuco. Shaped by military bands, carnival clubs, urban repertoires, and gestures connected to capoeira, it became one of the most vibrant expressions of Brazilian popular culture. From historical names such as Capiba and Nelson Ferreira to contemporary performers and promoters such as Lia de Itamaracá, Maestro Spok, Alceu Valença, and SpokFrevo Orquestra, frevo projects an image of Brazil marked by collective energy, rhythmic sophistication, popular invention, and festive endurance. Its recognition by UNESCO and its presence on stages, in museums, schools, digital archives, and carnivals beyond Pernambuco have expanded its circulation as a symbol of urban creativity, Afro-Brazilian memory, and Northeastern identity in motion.
