Sumaúma is a trilingual journalism platform based in Altamira, in the state of Pará, launched in 2022 to tell the story of the Amazon from the perspective of its own territories, voices, and urgent realities. Founded by Eliane Brum, Jonathan Watts, Verónica Goyzueta, Talita Bedinelli, and Carla Jiménez, the initiative describes itself as “journalism from the center of the world,” shifting the perspective that has historically treated the rainforest as a periphery and affirming the Amazon as a crucial center for understanding the planet’s present and future.

In line with its ambition to “Amazonize the world,” Sumaúma brings together reporting, analysis, science, climate, and critical thought through a perspective deeply rooted in the region, with a strong presence of Indigenous and Amazonian voices. In doing so, it projects a Brazil capable of shaping global debates not only through its images and symbols, but also through the language, ecological awareness, and political imagination it develops around the rainforest.

• Coverage and interviews across international journalism and climate media outlets and networks, expanding its reach beyond Brazilian audiences.
• Publication in three languages, allowing reporting from the Amazon to reach readers in different countries without relying solely on republication by other outlets.
• Training of “forest journalists” through the Micélio program, signaling institutional continuity and influence over new ways of reporting on the region.
• Recognition in the fields of design and digital communication, reinforcing the project’s aesthetic and symbolic strength.
